Review: The General Sutter 1764 Restaurant

The General Sutter 1764 Restaurant

Set on the square in historic downtown Lititz, the General Sutter prides itself on combining colonial heritage and elegant atmosphere with contemporary and inspired culinary creations. Ranging from the casual, pub-style fare like fish and chips and a grilled Angus burger to filet mignon, they tend to meet expectations.

On first walking in, guests find themselves in an enchanting old entryway that also serves as the entry for the hotel upstairs from the restaurant. The deep wood tones and bright whites are reminiscent of the colonial era in which parts of the original building were constructed. The old-fashioned hotel desk graces the foyer, as does a comfortable sitting area.
The dining room is much the same as the foyer with large round tables dotted across it and decked with white table cloths. Though the dining room is relatively small compared to some fine dining restaurants, it is made to feel larger by the extremely high ceilings and tall arched windows. Even in the evening, when the restaurant is packed for dinner, the windows and the large iron chandeliers give off enough light to make the room feel cheery and comfortable.
The menu is a delightful mix of pub food and upscale dishes including Maryland crab, Salmon, filet mignon, and daily specials so that even the pickiest eaters will find something to suit their tastes. While the food is always elegant and well presented, the menu itself changes slightly from season to season to take advantage of the local produce and meat supply.
No matter what the season, the restaurant’s menu is complemented by a continental wine list that is compiled by the manager and several wine experts, as well as a list of selected beers that are also served in the Boar’s Head Pub that is also under the roof of the General Sutter.
All in all, the food and drink is good for the palate and the atmosphere is cheerful and a great place to go with friends or relatives for a fun evening. If you are staying in a local bed and breakfast where you must find you own way to dinner, the General Sutter 1764 Restaurant is recommended by several innkeepers with the Lancaster County Bed and Breakfast Inns Association as a good place to try that is near many great places to stay.
